What We're Wearing April 4th, 2014

Today I'm wearing Physicians Formula Happy Booster™ Glow & Mood Boosting Baked Bronzer. It has everything you need for easy application - a brush and mirror are included in the compact! I am totally obsessed with this bronzer. You can apply it wet or dry - but, so far, I have only tried it dry. After using the brush to sweep the bronzer all over my face, I am left with a sun kissed glow. The little heart, in the center of the compact provides just the right amount of shimmer. They say applying the bronzer wet gives you a more intense glow - I will definitely be trying that application this summer. The formula claims to makes you happy - it supposedly mimics the effect of endorphins. While I can't guarantee that claim, I can guarantee the results (and yummy scent!) will leave you quite pleased.

Today I'm wearing my latest passion project: "phraselets." I love jewelry that says something, preferably something a little twisted and unexpected, as it plays brilliantly against the cute or pretty aesthetic of a piece of jewelry - like In God We Trust's heart charm necklaces engraved with phrases like "Go F*ck Yourself." (It says the whole thing, though, guys.) Since I also love this whole recent '90s revival, I combined the two ideas to bring back letter bead bracelets, with the slightly more grown-up addition of chain backs. And they're for sale, hurrah! You can find them at: https://www.etsy.com/shop/sobbingonfifth for $20 a pop - customizable ones are soon to come!

Beauty Secrets Revealed Volume XIII - Beauty Myths Edition

You should ONLY listen to me when it comes to beauty tips. Fine, that may sound a bit bossy and rude, but there are too many people trying to fill your head with lies! I share all of my beauty secrets with you, now it's time to share some of the worse myths out there.

1.) Wearing Makeup Causes Acne

This is just not true. If you feel more confident with makeup on, feel free to wear it. What will cause acne is not the makeup itself, it's using dirty makeup brushes and not washing your makeup off everyday. If you regularly clean you makeup brushes, and toss old sponges you will be okay. You also can't stop removing your makeup and washing your face at the end of the day. If you already have acne or breakouts, switch to an oil free foundation.

2.) Using A Foundation A Few Shades Darker Than Your Skin Tone Will Make You Look Tan

Umm... no, it won't. It will only make you look like you are wearing the wrong makeup. Invest in a bronzer and wear it on top of the correct foundation color.

3.) Pump Your Mascara Wand For More Product

Please stop doing this! It doesn't give you more mascara, it just dries out the tube. Plus, you should be replacing your mascara every three months. If you're needing to pump the wand, you have probably had it for more than three months, and it's time to toss it and get a new one.

4.) Split Ends Can Be Repaired

This may be the most upsetting myth, sadly it's not true. Split ends means the bottom of the hair shaft has split in half. Certain products will hold the two pieces together, and mask the look of split ends, but won't actually undo the damage. I'm not saying don't use these products, they can definitely help your split ends from getting worse.

5.) Regular Trims Makes Your Hair Grow Faster

Actually, it doesn't Your hair growth cycle isn't sped up from trimming your ends. This doesn't mean regular trims aren't important! Trimming the ends of hair will snip off your split ends and stop them from breaking off your hair.

SOF Scoop: Jessica Faulkner

You know we live for introducing you to designers and spotlighting ones you love. Today, Jessica Faulkner, who we are so excited about because of her effortlessly cool, boy-meets-girl aesthetic. Creating the modern classics with pieces that are on-trend yet will always be so in style, So-Cal native Jessica embodies everything we love about LA style.

Sobbing On Fifth: How did you get your start as a designer?
Jessica Faulkner: I started working with any fashion related company as soon as I started fashion school. I just worked my way up until I decided that I was ready to start my own label. Entrepreneurship is in my blood, so I knew that I wanted to have my own company from a young age.

SOF: What or who were some of your biggest influences?
JF: My biggest influences are the strong confident women in my life that have always been supportive of my goals no matter how big and crazy they may be. And, Grace Coddington is the unsung hero of fashion.

SOF: How was it to design your first collection?
JF: It was exciting and new and a lot of pressure. I feel like the most difficult part of designing my first collection was making changes to suit the needs of many different people. I learned quickly that you just can't please everyone. Now, I have a much stronger sense of balance in the design process.

SOF: What do you look to for inspiration when designing?
JF: I always travel to help inspire the main concept of the collection and then absorb as much about the culture, environment and people to help build out that concept. For the Spring/ Summer 2013 collection, the inspiration for the prints came from the Arabic Sea, Kuwaiti sunsets seen during a light sandstorm and palm trees that pop up like an oasis in the desert.

SOF: How would you describe your personal style?
JF: Rebellious/feminine.

SOF: Do you have any sort of style advice or mantra you live by?
JF: Less is more. Keep it simple.

SOF: Where would you like to see your line in five or ten years?
JF: I would like to become a market leader in women's fashion with an increase in product range including shoes and accessories. I would also like to open flagship stores in Los Angeles and New York.

SOF: What is the last thing you bought?
JF: The last thing I bought was a pair of vintage blush suede Miu Miu heels from my favorite local vintage store, Buttons & Bows.

Shaving vs Waxing Myths

It's time, once and for all, to disprove the beauty myth about shaving and waxing! No, shaving your legs doesn't make your hair grow back thicker over time. And waxing doesn't make your hair grow back thinner and lighter over time. While shaving can appear to make your hair seem thicker and waxing can appear to make your hair thinner, over time it will not make a difference.

I apologize in advance for my poorly drawn pictures! Hair follicles are thicker at the base and thinner at the tip.

When you shave your legs, it cut off the hair follicle at the base, where it meets your skin. When the hair starts to grow back, the thickest part of the follicle grows out first.

When you wax your legs, it pulls out the entire follicle. When your hair grows back in, the tip of the hair grows out first, i.e. the thinnest, finest part of the follicle.
